iBEX successfully tendered for the refurbishment of Sandal Castle stairs, decking, bridges and viewing platform. The project required considerable collaboration between iBEX as Principal Contractor and the client to re-design the works as structures were dismantled in order to make repairs in a sympathetic and cost effective manner.
iBEX worked cohesively with the Arcadis and Wakefield Council teams, bringing in additional expertise including, archaeologists, geotechnical engineers, scaffolders, and ground investigation contractor, to ensure the project was delivered effectively and efficiently, maximising the available budget.
Project phases included:
- Extensive vegetation removal, to enable clear sight of the elements to be refurbished
- Excavation of bridge supports to carry out micro drill testing
- Installation of scaffolding to facilitate access to a wall head bridge
- Installation of a designed scaffold to support the weight of moat bridge to enable the bridge support works to be carried out
- iBEX worked closely with Geotechnical designers Coffey Geotechnics to design a micro pile system that could be installed easily within a scheduled ancient monument
- Micro piles were installed using Dywidag R38 self drilling hollow bars in a vertical application, all piles installed by iBEX staff using our own plant and equipment
- Construction of reinforced concrete pile cap to structural engineer’s design, overcoming the challenges of pouring concrete within a Castle and 200m from the nearest access road
- Re-building of the stairs up to the viewing platform
- Installation of a bespoke stainless steel and oak handrailing across all access structures
- All oak used on this project was 2 year air dried UK sourced material
